Brake Inventory Clearance
Since the introduction of electronic brake systems like ABS and ESP, brake fluid has far greater importance than in the past. The hydraulic components of these systems have a large number of fine bores and ducts, some of which are finer than a human hair.
Selection of the wrong brake fluid therefore can have disastrous effects on the operation of advanced brake systems. Since ESP was introduced, brake fluids have to decelerate individual wheels within small fractions of a second in order to stabilize the vehicle in critical situations (e.g., skidding). DOT 5.1 fluids are especially formulated with lower viscosity for use in ESP or anti Lock brake systems.
